Silver Squire

A Silver Squire is one of the most important volunteer positions in the Silver Knights Alzheimer’s Charity. A Silver Squire must foremost be someone who has a love for our senior citizens. All other considerations are secondary. You must be very patient and kind. You must be able to feel comfortable with loosing a game of chess. Every Silver Squire will receive some training by email and when possible by Webcam.

A Silver Squire must know the rules of chess. A Silver Squire need only be a fair chess player. You do not teach chess as the Silver Knights do. Your goal is to assist the Silver Knights in your area.
Your main duty when not helping Silver Knights is to go to local facilities and simply play chess with the seniors. Sometimes the Silver Knights will give you leads but you also have to be proactive and go find the seniors who want to play by contacting hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior centers.

Many of the people you will play will not be very good chess players themselves, so that is why we do not want very good chess players to become Silver Squires. Your goal is to help the senior to find the best chess partner for him or her. If you have a USCF rating it should not be higher than 1500. Those without a rating are more than welcome to apply, as you are the person for which we are looking.

A Silver Squire must be willing to donate at least 1 hour per week. They must have transpiration to up to 5 miles from your home in urban area and longer sometimes in rural areas.

A Silver Squire must be willing to submit a report to the Silver Knight National Headquarters once per month by email describing your accomplishments that month. Having previous experience working with the elderly is ideal but not mandatory. You must have had experience playing chess though. If you are interested in helping the Silver Knights or in playing chess, please fill out the application below. There is no pay other than the joy of knowing that you have saved the lives of our precious senior citizens and added joy to their lives.

The Duties of a Silver Squire

A Silver Squire donates at least 1 hour per week to serving the community by protecting adults and the elderly from Alzheimer’s disease by playing chess with them. The goal of a Silver Knight is to develop friendships with a minimum of 10 adults or seniors and play chess with them every week. Your commitment is for 1 year. After that time you may renew your Silver Squire commitment if you wish.

Once your application has been approved you will contact and set appointments to go to hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, senior centers and anywhere you can find adults who want to play chess. Our research shows that in urban areas there may be as many as 40 locations within a 5-mile radius of your home.

You will purchase at least 5 “Quality Chess Set Combos”($50) and at least one Personalized Silver Squire Golf Shirt ($30) available in our store. (About an $80.00 investment). You will give chess sets, chess books, and chess magazines and chess awards to your opponents as needed. The Silver Knights Headquarters will email you detailed instructions on how to specifically play chess with seniors.

In order to present to the public and our students a uniformed program, the documents used in the program may not be changed without written confirmation from The Silver Knights National Headquarters in Scottsdale Arizona. That being said, we are always open to suggestions from our Silver Squires as to improvements to any aspect of the program.

The Vigil

Every Silver Squire must go through the following vigil. He or she is bound by a code of chivalry, as were the Knights of old. Please read carefully and think before answering.

The Silver Knights’ Code of Chivalry

Defense - The Silver Squire is sworn by oath to defend the elderly against the monster called Alzheimer’s.

Joy - Bring happiness to those you serve, for many are going through difficult times.

Generosity - Be generous in so far as your resources allow. Give a little if you only have a little. Give a lot of you have a lot.

Humility - Value first the contributions of others; do not boast of your own accomplishments, let others do this for you.

Courage - Being a Squire often means choosing the more difficult path, the personally expensive one.

Truth - Speak always the truth. To lie is to dishonor yourself, and the powers of Good.

Loyalty - Be known for unwavering commitment to the people and ideals you choose to live by.

Faith - A Silver Squire must have faith in his beliefs, for faith roots him and gives hope against the despair that human failings create.

Righteousness - Seek to emulate everything I have spoken of as sincerely as possible, not for the reason of personal gain but because it is right.

Courtesy - Treat all, but especially the elderly with kindness and tenderness. Honor them for they richly deserve your respect.

Nobility - Seek great stature of character by holding to the virtues and duties of a Silver Squire, realizing that though the ideals cannot be reached, the quality of striving towards them ennobles the spirit, growing the character from dust towards the heavens.
